An extra $2.41 million worth of chips found their way onto the tables during the latter stages of the WSOP main-event, and as yet it is still a mystery how they got there.
Both Harrah’s and the Nevada Gaming Commission have been investigating the incident, but neither have been able to come up with a satisfactory explanation, concluding instead that the chips probably got their by mistake.
“There were extra chips that had been introduced into the tournament, inadvertently, apparently,” said Jerry Markling, head of the Gaming Commission’s enforcement unit.
“We looked at various angles to discover whether or no there was any criminal involvement, and we could not substantiate that there was any,” he added. “We made some recommendations to Harrah’s concerning possible future improvements, and we closed the investigation.”
Markling added that it is not unusual for extra chips to appear during colour ups, but 2.41 million is off the charts, the equivalent of an extra 241 players. He said that the mistake didn’t effect the outcome of the event of benefit any one player, but such vague assertions will do nothing to quash the rumours that something illicit went on at last years WSOP main-event. Until anything is proven however, rumours are all it will be.
