Critics trash latest poker film

Lucky You, the much hyped poker flick starring Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore, has been labelled the poker equivalent of a donkey by critics on the eve of its release.

The film has been collecting dust on a shelf for the last 12 months, but with Warner Bros preparing its release for this weekend, those critics lucky enough to see it have begged for it to be put back where it came from.

But before you cancel your cinema tickets those of you who actually play poker might take a moment to read the detail of these reviews; you might be pleasantly surprised.

Brian Lowry of Variety says the film contains “too much card play”, while Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly said “this movie is about the joy of checks, calls, folds, rivers and the acquired thrill of knowing what those word mean.” So basically it’s a film about poker!

The film, directed by Curtis Hanson, acclaimed director of L.A. Confidential and 8 Mile, follows the story of a professional poker player Huck Cheever (Eric Bana) who finds love, in the shape of Vegas lounge singer Bille Offer (Drew Barrymore), wisdom, money and an estranged father whilst competing at the World Series of Poker.

It features cameo’s from real poker pros in the shape of Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Minh Ly, Mike Matusow, Daniel Negreanu and others.
