World Poker Tour swaps France for Spain

Tuesday’s news that the World Poker Tour has cancelled its stop at the Grand Prix De Paris was offset somewhat today by the announcement of an additional WPT stopover in Spain, scheduled for October this year.

The WPT has made a deal with Grup Perlada to film a major tournament in Spain’s Casino Barcelona, the same casino that hosts the World Heads-Up Poker Championships and the Spanish leg of the European Poker Tour.

It will be the first time a Spanish poker tournament has featured in the WPT schedule, and reflects the continued growth of poker outside the United States. The news is particularly well timed for European Poker after Tuesday’s announcement that the Grand Prix De Paris would not be a WPT event this year because French gaming authorities had refused permission for the tournament to be filmed.

If recent EPT events are anything to go by the Spanish WPT is bound to be huge, since every EPT event of 2007 has been a sell out, with hundred of players unable to get a seat.
