UK poker clubs prepare to challenge Gambling Act

According to the UK’s The Observer, the country’s poker clubs are preparing a legal challenge to some parts of the Gambling Act 2005, which will be implemented this September.

The UK Poker Clubs Association (UKPCA) is objecting to a number of new regulations which will be come into force in September, especially the forcing of poker clubs to obtain casino licenses. They are also unhappy that daily membership fees will be limited to £3.

In order to fight the new regulations a trade association will be set up next week, and the UKPCA has already lined up a number of top legal advisors along with the PR company Citigate.

Outlining the problem, Geoff Owen, chairman of the UKPCA, said: “The imposition of casino licenses on poker clubs is neither appropriate no fair and could result in the closure of many clubs.”

“The Gambling Act could also result in a rise in unregulated ‘underground’ poker,” warned Owen.
