Gold and Crispin settle lawsuit
WSOP Champion Jamie Gold and plaintiff Bruce Crispin Leyser have settled their $12 million lawsuit out of court, accoding to a release by the Associated Press earlier this morning.
The two men released a joint statement on Tuesday saying: “Jamie always intended on sharing his winnings with Crispin. Jamie and Crispin are happy to report that they have fully settled this matter. They are pleased to be closing this chapter and look forward to continued success.”
The dispute began after Jamie Gold overcame a field of 8772 players in the 2006 WSOP main-event to win the $12 million first prize. Within days Crispin Leyser had filed a lawsuit in a Las Vegas court, claiming half of Jamie’s winnings as part of a pre-tournament agreement he alleged to have made with Gold. Leyser said that Gold had promised him half of any potential winnings from the WSOP in exchange for Leyser providing celebrities to play in the event wearing Bodog sponsored clothing.
Gold disputed the claim in court, but Judge Roger Hunt ordered that half of the $12 million be frozen pending a result in the court case. Then in December, Judge Hunt indicated it was highly likely that Cripsin Leyser would win the court case, largely because Leyser had kept an answerphone message from Gold in which Gold promised him “his half”.
How much Leyser is set to receive in the settlement has not yet been made clear.
