2007 French EPT is cancelled
The European Poker Tour has been forced to cancel the French Open, it was revealed last week, due to pressure from the French authorities.
A statement released on the EPT website explained that the French EPT, due to take place at the Casino Barriere in Deauville between Feb 20 and Feb 24, had been suspended indefinitely after a last-minute intervention by the French authorities.
John Duthie, CEO of the EPT, said the intervention had made it “impossible for the Barriere group to run a poker tournament on the premises in Deauville.” He added that he would appeal against the decision but that the Deauville tournament would be suspended indefinitely until further notice.
The decision is a blow for the EPT, which has been experiencing record numbers over the past six months, with most recent events proving so popular they have had to turn players away. Deauville would almost certainly have been a sell out tournament.
While neither the French authorities nor the EPT have publicly identified a reason for the intervention speculation is growing that it has to do with PokerStars.com’s sponsorship of the EPT. The French have a history of antipathy towards online gambling, as is evidenced by the September arrest of two BWin executives. The fact that the EPT is sponsored by an online poker room is therefore the most likely reason for the cancellation.
