Negreanu makes his seventh WPT final table
The WPT World Poker Open in Tunica attracted a smaller field than most recent WPT events, with just 294 players paying the $10,000 buy-in, less than a third of the the number that competed in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure earlier this month.
But while there may be fewer players, there is no less excitement, especially with Daniel Negreanu at the final table - his second WPT final table in a row. And not only is Kid Poker at the final table, he is also lying second in the chip counts, mainly thanks to seventh place finisher Robert Thompson who bluffed away all but $12,000 of his chips to Negreanu when he moved all-in with king high only for Negreanu to show trips. The $1.296 million pot sent Negreanu soaring into second place, and left Thompson staring at the final table bubble; he was eliminated the very next hand.
The man with the best chance of picking up the $913,986 first prize looks to be Young Cho, an Oklahoma native with just $40,000 of tournament winnings to his name. He is guaranteed to more than triple that tomorrow, but with $2.57 million in chips at the start of play he will be hoping to push for the title.
It won’t be easy however, as this is one of the highest quality WPT final tables of recent times. Standing in his way, besides Negreanu, will be Thang “Kido” Pham, who won the Bally’s WSOP Circuit event in 2005 and has over $1 million in tournament earnings. And although he is shortstacked, J.C. Tran who starts the day in sixth position, is one of the form players of the last 12 months, only just missing out on the 2006 Player of the Year.
The final table starts tomorrow at 5pm Central USA time. The chip counts are as follows:
Young Cho - $2.57 million
Daniel Negreanu - $1.296 million
Thang “Kido” Pham - $781,000
Bryan Sumner - $596,000
Gary Kainer - $514,000
J.C. Tran - $181,000
