Magnus Petersson is first EPT champion of 2007
It was the 29-year old Swede's first appearance on the European Poker Tour but it seems unlikely to be his last, after Magnus Petersson from Stockholm collected the €550,000 ($715,000) first prize and the title of Scandinavian Poker Open champion in Copenhagen last weekend.

Petersson, a financial adviser, qualified for the tournament by playing in a PokerStars.com Saturday satellite; time he said he normally reserves for his girlfriend. But, in his own words: "She was away that day, luckily!"

Perhaps mindful of her (accidental) part in his triumph Petersson dedicated part of his winnings to buy his girlfriend a new BMW.

Petersson's performance in Copenhagen was impressive, though as with most tournament wins it was graced by a bit of luck as well. In Petersson's case the most stand out bit of luck came when he bluffed all-in with 7-2o and was called by A-K, but caught a two to win the pot with one pair.

But that didnt diguise the fact that Petersson played good solid poker throughout the tournament, especially on the final table, and was a thoroughtly deserving winner ahead of Betrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Richard Toth.

The German Open is next on the EPT calendar, and takes place in Dortmund, Germany on March 8th-11th. The event is almost certain to reach the capped limit of 500 players by the time play begins, as 410 players are already registered.
