WPT Festa al Lago: Day Four
There was no hanging around on Day Four of the Festa al Lago, with the first elimination (and possibly the tournaments biggest pot to date) coming inside 15 minutes.
The damage occurred when Brandon Cantu (who began the day fourth in chips) opened a pot from under the gun with a $32,000 raise. Joe Pelton, the chip leader, called and both saw a flop of T-7-2. Cantu then bet $40k and Pelton flat called; the turn was a nine and Cantu bet $100k and Pelton called. The river was another nine, and this time when Cantu bet $100k, Pelton moved all-in. Cantu called showing pocket sevens for a full house, but Pelton turned over 9-7 for a better (and very lucky) full house). Cantu was a 92 percent favourite after the flop, and a 95 percent favourite after the turn, but he caught a miracle (not unlike against his win against Nick Shulman on Day Three) to eliminate Cantu in 18th and take a massive chip lead.
Just fifteen minutes later and another suck out dealt a fatal blow to Joe Tehan after he got all his money in the middle with 9-6 on a board showing K-9-9; Steve Wong called with K-3 and rivered a king to win the pot.
The first household name to go was the 2001 WSOP champion Carlos “El Matador” Mortensen, who fell in 14th when his 6-6 failed to improve against Can Kim Hua’s T-T. He was immediately followed to the rail by Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, who was eliminated by the same opponent when his A-Q couldn’t catch up against Hua’s K-K.
When “Captain” Tom Franklin was eliminated in 11th the final ten players redrew for the final table, with Joe Pelton still holding a commanding chip lead. Then with seven players left Pelton extended that lead, after winning a huge pot from Can Kim Hua, when he rivered a flush with 8-6 after Hua tried to slow play a flopped set of queens.
With one player left it fell to Danny Smith to take the dubious title of bubble boy. He had already lost a quarter of his stack when David Baker moved all-in over the top of his preflop re-raise, and it was the same player who dealt the final blow. This time when Baker raised preflop (to $55,000) Smith didn’t leave himself open to a re-raise, instead moving all-in for $242,000 more. Baker then made what turned out to be an excellent call with A-8 and was ahead from start to finish against Danny Smith’s K-T.
Below are the chip counts for the final table, and the day’s eliminations and payouts:
