Bill become law and Harrah’s say online qualifiers for WSOP will not count
The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) became law on Friday when President Bush, as expected, signed the Port Security Bill, onto which the UIGEA was attached.
Unsurprisingly the President made no mention of the UIGEA when he signed the bill, instead choosing to comment on the Port Security elements of the act, saying: "We're going to protect our ports. We're going to defend this homeland, and we're going to win this war on terror,"
With the bill becoming law PartyPoker immediately became inaccessible to US players.
Not long afterwards word leaked out the Harrah’s had decided not to allow online qualifiers for the 2007 WSOP. While the company is yet to issue a formal statement, details of the proposed change have leaked out after Harrah’s reportedly contacted some of the major online poker rooms with the news.
If true, and the change meant that no-one who would otherwise have qualified online would play in the 2007 WSOP, the change could reduce the number of participants by as much as 75 percent. However what seems more likely is that winners of online satellites would simply receive the monetary equivalent of a main-event ticket, and would be required to fill out the pre-registration forms themselves.
If that transpired, and it is very likely it will, then the drastic predictions of doom and gloom for the WSOP are clearly way out of kilter with the reality of the situation. Of course it is reasonable to assume that the WSOP may not continue to grow at the rate of the last three years, and that indeed numbers may even fall due to the number of US based players who will give up playing poker online, however there are so many ways around the qualification issues that a field of over 5000 seems likely.
In the meantime PokerStars, Full Tilt and Bodog have re-confirmed their commitment to the US market.
