Alex Jacob wins US Poker Championship
One of the youngest stars on the poker circuit, Alex Jacob, won his first major event on Sunday when he beat all-comers at the US Poker Championship’s $10,000 buy-in main event, taking his tally of live earnings for 2006 to over $1.6 million.
The 21-year-old Ivy League major from Yale University first came to public attention in April this year, when he stormed the final table at Foxwoods WPT World Poker Finals, finishing second to Victor Ramdin and picked up $655,507.
Jacob, known online as “Yahtzem”, proved this was no fluke by cashing four times at this year’s WSOP, making two final tables and collecting a total of $130,793.
But this win at the US Poker Championship eclipsed all his previous triumphs put together. Jacob had to overcome a field of 291, which although it was significantly smaller than the fields for most WSOP events he played in, was a major challenge all the same.
Jacob was fearsome throughout, but really came into his own on the final table. Starting third in the chip count he quickly doubled through the chip leader and fellow Internet sensation, Jordan “iMsoLucky0” Morgan, when he flopped the nut straight with T-9. He soon moved into the outright lead, raking a huge pot off the then chip leader Michael DeMichele when he moved all-in over-the-top of a $600,000 re-raise from DeMichele on the flop, forcing the New York native to lay down.
With just three players left Jacob took no time wrapping up his victory, eliminating Michael DeMichele in third place to take a 6:1 chip lead into the heads-up stage with Jordan Morgan. The battle of the Internet legends lasted just one hand; Jordan Morgan raised with KQ only for Jacob to move all-in over the top with A5. Morgan called but an ace on the flop dashed his hopes of a double up. He picked up $405,072 for second place. Alex Jacob collected $878,500.
