Amarillo Slim shot at in attempted robbery
Add another chapter to the life story of the legendary Thomas “Amarillo Slim” Preston, because at 78 years old his adventures are far from over. In the early hours of Wednesday morning Slim escaped from an attempted armed robbery, apparently unhurt.
According to the Amarillo Globe News, Slim was lucky to escape alive when a yellow vehicle cut off Slim’s car, forcing him onto the curb. The police report states the attacker got out of the car, pulled out a handgun and demanded money from Slim.
As an ex-Texas Rounder the septuagenarian Slim has had his fair share of guns pulled on him in his time, and his instincts were as quick this time as they must have been on the road in 1950’s Texas. As the robber pulled his gun Slim immediately threw his car into reverse and slammed on the accelerator. The assailant then fired three shots, two of which struck Slim’s car, but not the man himself. According to the report the robber then jumped back into his own car and pursued Slim before Slim gave him the slip and was able to call the police.
Sound like a scene from a movie? Well in a few years time that’s exactly what it might be, with the movie “Amarillo Slim,” starring Nicolas Cage, currently in pre-production. If it comes close to the excitement of Slim’s life (or Slim’s version of his life) then it will definitely be worth a watch.
