Jamie Gold given access to half his winnings
Jamie Gold, winner of the biggest prize in the history of poker, will soon have access to half of the $12 million he won in the 2006 WSOP main-event.
Roger L. Hunt, the U.S. District Court Judge in Charge of the case, is expected to sign an injunction in the very near future that freezes $6 million of Gold's tournament winnings, but allows him access to the remaining $6 million. This is according to Richard Schonfeld, the attorney for Bruce Crispin Leyer, the plaintiff in the case against Gold.
In one of the less savoury aspects of an otherwise terrific World Series Jamie Gold is being sued by a man (Bruce Crispin Leyer) who claims he had an arrangement with Gold that guaranteed him half of anything Gold won in the main-event. The agreement allegedly came about because of Leyer's work in recruiting celebrities to play in the main-event whilst wearing sponsored gear.
Leyser's main case rests upon a saved phone message he has from Jamie Gold, in which Gold promises not to renege on the deal to give Leyser half the winnings. If the message can be proved (a transcript of which is available in our news archives from last month) the Gold will be left in an extremely tough position.
In the weeks since the writ was served Gold, in a number of interviews, has acknowledged Leyser's help in recuiting celebrities. It therefore appears that the issue is not whether or not Leyser should get a cut, but just how much that cut should be. Only time will tell.
