“High Stakes Poker” commissions third season: invites Jamie Gold
If you haven’t yet managed to catch GSN’s High Stakes Poker then let me tell you you’re missing out on the best poker show ever made. Now I’m not prone to making those sorts of sweeping statements, because normally they are simply not true, but in the case of High Stakes Poker (HSP) I’m prepared to make an exception.

The format of HSP is very simple. A select group of the world’s greatest poker players are invited to play with their own money in a high stakes cash game that will be filmed in the same way as the WPT and the WSOP. The minimum amount of money the pros are allowed to bring to the table is $100,000 but there is no upper limit to the buy-in. The game is No-Limit Texas Hold’em.

In the first season of HSP players such as Daniel Negreanu, Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein, Sam Farha, Phil Hellmuth and many others sat down at the table. There they played, in full view of those watching at home, the game they play for a living. Not poker. But cash game poker.

The different strategies adopted by the players was just one of the many interesting facets of this format. While many players, like John Juanda for example, sat down with the minimum $100,000, Daniel Negreanu decided to sit down with $1 million. His plan was to play fast and loose and intimidate the other players at the table and to do so he believed he needed a seriously deep stack.

His plan (from his point of view) had mixed success, but for the television audience it was a smash hit. Negreanu first lost almost his entire $1 million stack before finally moving in the right direction to end just about even for the series. With aces against kings and full houses against quads, $200,000+ pots were a regular feature on the HSP, with one pot topping $500,000. Phil Hellmuth and Mike Matusow provided the fireworks and everyone provided a number of valuable poker lessons.

The third season promises to be even more exciting with a host of new names invited to the party. Of those the 2006 WSOP champion Jamie Gold is perhaps the most notable, though even with an extra $12 million in his pocket it is not clear whether he will accept the invitation. Taping will begin in October at an as yet undisclosed venue.
