WSOP Championship: Day Three – We’re in the money!
It’s the day that matters most. Payday. After six days of the main-event we’ve lost over 8000 players and almost all the big stars, but those that made it to around 7pm on Day Three were going to be going home with money in their pocket.

When the bubble looms in a poker tournament like the WSOP main-event the tension in the room is something else. Although you can be sure almost every player in the room knows how you’re supposed pay aggressively around the bubble there was not a short stack in sight who was putting the theory into practice.

Sweaty palms and thundering hearts were the order of the day, and there were some excruciating moments to back them up. One knock out was so cruel it will doubtless give the victim nightmares fro weeks.

After Mike Sullivan raised $30,000 from the small blind the big blind called for the rest of his chips. Turning over pocket aces he announced that it was the only hand he would play until they had passed the bubble. Up against Sullivan’s pocket sixes he was in great shape before the flop, and even better shape afterwards after both players flopped a set. Only one six remained in the deck that could snatch the win away from him, but it duly dropped on the turn, giving Sullivan the pot and sending the big blind home in agony.

Eventually, much to the relief of all the players in the room, the announcement was made that they had all been waiting for. “Congratulations players. You’re in the money.” The room erupted.

876 players made it and for many of those it appeared that was enough. Playing without restriction around 150 players were eliminated in the next 15 minutes, generating some lengthy queues at the payout desks.

Of course not everyone was playing cautiously near the bubble. Cautious doesn’t really suit Negreanu and he spent Day three on a roller coaster. Starting with over $300,000 chips, good enough for the third biggest stack, Negreanu lost a big hand early on and was down to $29,000 by the dinner break. By the end of the day however Negreanu had picked up some pots, and a pair of pocket aces helped build him back to around $100,000.

Along with Negreanu there will be some other big names coming back to play on Day Four. Allen Cunningham, Joe Hachem, Cyndy Violette, Annie Duke, Humberto Brenes, Hoyt Corkins, Jeffrey Lisandro, and Tom McEvoy, among others, will all return tomorrow. Those that won’t include Phil Ivey, Carlos Mortensen and Layne Flack.

Chip leader going into Day Four is David Chiu.
