WSOP Update: Main-Event Day One (A)
Finally it has arrived. The Big One is upon us. And How! 2138 players started today, meaning the total number of entrants is gong to be at least 8400, and possibly as high as 8800.
The first day of the championship event got off to a slightly shaky start. So far in the 2006 WSOP of poker players have been allowed to wear pretty much what they like. That included sponsored shirts with a DOT COM logo on and naturally many players turned up in the same gear they had been wearing up till now.
Cue a strange ruling and ensuing mayhem. That’s right. Harrah’s waited until just before the main-event started to tell players they would not be allowed to wear anything with a dot.com logo on and watched as the hall erupted. You had to wonder. What did they expect?
After a frantic dash to the shops, where copious amounts of black tape were bought to cover up the offending letters, the 2006 WSOP main-event got off to a (slightly delayed) start.
So who was there on day one? Well. Plenty.
In no particular order the first days action featured Scotty Nguyen, Carlos Mortensen, Barry Greenstein, Julian Gardener, David “the Dragon” Pham, Layne Flack, Hoyt Corkins, Dutch Boyd, John Duthie, Jim Betchel, Andy Bloch, Mike Sexton, Tony Bloom, Gus Hansen, Tony G, David Slansky, Berry Johnston, Mike “the Grinder” Mirazchi, Juha Hellpi, Joe Bartholdi, William Chen, Dan Harrington, and Tobey Maguire. There were more, but my fingers are getting sore!
Of those Dan Harrington and Tobey Maguire have been eliminated, while Julian Gardener, Scotty Nguyen and David Pham have accumulated impressive chip stacks. The rest are in the middle of the pack, with chip stacks ranging from $5000 to $18,000.
Currently in the chip lead, with $86,000 in chips, is Mark Vos, who is a good deal ahead of the rest of he field. We have played for nine hours so far, and will continue late into the night in order to get he field down to around 900 players. They will come back to play after the other three “first” days have been played out.
