Arrested poker players plan to challenge law in court
A group of Mount Pleasant poker players who were arrested in April for gambling have asked the judge for a jury trial in an attempt to amend the state’s 200-year-old laws on card and dice games.
22 players were arrested in a police raid in April this year during which police confiscated nearly six thousand dollars. 4 of them elected to plead guilty to the charges laid against them and were fined $100 each, but the other 18 players have decided to take their case all the way to the top.
Authorities say that the games took place at a high stakes poker parlour which advertised itself over the Internet. However the police then added that players paid $20 to buy-in with a percentage of proceeds going to the house – hardly high stakes in today’s climate.
No date has yet been set for the trial.
