Spaniard wins World Heads-up Poker Championship (WHUPC)
The grandly named Isaac Mayolas de Vega became the new WHUP Champion yesterday when he triumphed on home turf, securing the title after a gruelling battle against the Briton Paul “ActionJack” Jackson.

With strong home support cheering him on in Barcelona Mayolas de Vega came out on top after a three hour battle against Jackson, a man rapidly becoming a European poker sensation.

Both men had already won 6 heads-up battles by the time they face each other in the final, the last two men standing from a starting field of 128. Jackson was undoubtedly the favourite, having added the opening $1,000 No Limit Hold’em event of the WHUPC to a bulging resume of live and online tournament wins.

Sitting opposite the man considered to be one of the world’s best online tournament players was de Vega, a man with virtually no record to speak of, save his impressive showing in the WHUPC so far this year. Naturally de Vega started as a big underdog, but after a very tense opening period, his underdog tag began to seem inappropriate as he started to build a chip lead that eventually became considerable.

The victory was sealed when Jackson moved all-in with bottom pair and was called by de Vega who had top pair. For the second time in three years the trophy went to a Spaniard, though it can rarely have been won by a man with such a bare track record. One cash at the EPT Barcelona Open was the only result next to de Vega’s name before this win; perhaps the €125,000 win will prove a springboard for greater success.

Jackson, however, is already well accustomed to success. Online he is a fearsome competitor, and in live tournaments he is now beginning to prove just as deadly. With a $600,000 payday already under his belt (for his second place to Phil Ivey in the Monte Carlo Millions) Jackson is hitting form at just the right time. Look out for him in the 2006 WSOP.
