2006 WPT Mirage Poker Showdown – Day Two
195 players sat down at the felt at the start of Day Two needing to survive over twelve hours of poker if they were to make it to day three; just 27 of them were able to do so.

With blinds set at $400-$800 it didn’t take long for the first casualties to emerge; Allen Kessler was eliminated after just 25 minutes, and Kenna James, Barry Greenstein and Jesse Jones were among those sent packing within the first hour’s play.

There was to be no fairytale for defending champion Gavin Smith either, as he found himself a serious dog in an all-in race with two players. Smith had pocket sixes but was dominated by two better pocket pairs. It was highest pocket pair - the tens of Beverly Cheney - which held up over Smith’s sixes and the nines of Walter Chambers, and a bitterly disappointed Smith was sent home out of the money.

He was followed by Phil Ivey, outdrawn after flopping top pair, Huck Seed, whose A-J didn’t improve against Stan Weiss’ A-K and Kathy Liebert whose K-K was outflopped by Eli Elezra’s 8-8.

David Williams, the overnight leader, started strongly despite showing up late for the second day running. However his momentum was halted towards the end of the day when he lost a number of key pots and he will start day three in only 13th position with $267,000 chips.

Of the top 11 players I listed yesterday 6 survived into Day Three. Robert Mizrachi was the most successful of those, maintaining his second position by adding $588,000 to his overnight total to end the day with $693,000 chips. The losers were Patrik Antonius, Huck Seed, Minh Nguyen, Bill Edler and Gavin Smith.

But the undisputed winner on Day Two was Harry Demetriou. The retired clinical scientist has been playing poker professionally since 2002 and has already accumulated $1.2 million in tournament winnings. He looks sure to add substantially to that sum after amassing a formidable $828,000 chips seemingly from nowhere.

Play ended at 1:35am with the remaining 27 recommencing battle at 1pm PST tomorrow.
