Relatives form The Stu Ungar Foundation
Stu Ungar was one of the greatest poker players of all time, a three times WSOP champion and winner of countless other major tournaments. Sadly Ungar was also one of the most troubled characters the game has known, with a compulsive gambling problem as well as an ultimately fatal drug addiction in his later years.
The tragic end to Ungar’s life has motivated his former wife Madeline and his daughter Stefanie to form The Stu Ungar Foundation, with a mission to “deliver ongoing awareness of the problems associated with addictive behaviour including gambling, drugs, and suicide, and to supply much needed funds to qualified and recognized organizations that provide treatment and education.”
The popularity of Ungar and his family has ensured that Madeline and Stefanie will not be alone in this venture. Already Mike Sexton, WPT commentator and great friend of Stu Ungar, has pledged his support for the project.
Speaking about the Foundation, Madeline and Stefanie said: “We are confident the Foundation will accomplish something Stu was unable to do in his lifetime – help others avoid making the same mistakes he made. Thankfully, we can draw upon Stu’s great success and legacy as a champion to help create awareness for the first ever charity named after a poker player.”
The Ungars have enlisted the help of Joe Lake, co-founder of the Children’s Miracle Network, who will work as a volunteer consultant.
