Gavin Smith wins WPT Player of the Year
Gavin Smith, winner of the 2005 WPT Mirage Poker Showdown has been named the WPT Player of the Year for season IV, following in the footsteps of fellow Canadian Daniel Negreanu, who was last years winner.
Smith made a total of three final tables over season IV, which along with his first place at the Mirage Showdown, included a third place finish at the Doyle Brunson North American Poker Championship in October 2005 and a fourth place finish at the 2006 Gold Strike World Poker Open in January this year. That impressive record earned him a total of 2,100 WPT points, which was enough to earn him the coveted WPT Player of the Year title.
Speaking about the accolade Gavin said: “Winning the World Poker Tour Player of the Year award is very important to me because it proves to people that Gavin Smith is for real. It's an honour to join past winners Daniel Negreanu and Erick Lindgren as a recipient of this title.”
The as yet un-sponsored Smith will now be on the hunt for sponsors for this years WSOP – he should find it happy hunting!
