WPT Championship into second day
The WPT Championship – the 4th Annual Five Star World Poker Classic from the Bellagio – has reached the end of day two, with many of poker’s biggest names at the top of the chip count.
Day one of the championship was split into two days with the 605 starters split (roughly) evenly between the two days. With a $50,000 starting chip stack, play began predictably slowly, with players keen to hang on to at least the second day. Over the course of the two first days just 132 players were knocked out.
The pace of play changed considerably on day two, with chips flying around and players being eliminated by the minute. Only half the field survived into day three, and while many of the chip leaders are big name poker players, many of those eliminated are as well.
Phil Ivey, Daniel Negreanu, Alan Goehring, John Gale, Hoyt Corkins, Mike Matusow, Nick Shulman, Huck Seed and Kenna James are just some of the many stars to have perished so far, but nevertheless, this is far from a tournament for the unknowns.
Leading the tournament is Patrik Antonius, the Finnish runner-up in the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic in December 2005. His controlled aggression has helped him to build up a stack of $554,500.
Close behind in third is David Williams, runner up in the 2005 WSOP main-event, who turned a starting stack of $66,000 into $497,500 by the end of the day. Erick Lindgren, one of the most successful players in WPT history, is lying fourth, Mimi Tran is in ninth, Freddy Deeb in 12th, while the actor James Woods has been impressive throughout, and currently lies in 15th.
With over 200 players left in the competition there is still a long way to go, but expect to see some top names fighting it out for the first prize – a stupendous $3,760,165.
