GSN’s ‘High Stakes Poker’ pens in second season
It has proved to be the cream of the crop of recent poker television programs and as season one of GSN’s High Stakes Poker draws to a close a second season has already been pencilled in.

The first television program to feature high stakes cash games instead of tournament poker, High Stakes Poker has proved hugely popular, increasing its audience by 79% over previous GSN offerings.

Players bring their own money to the table, n my sit down with a minimum of $100,000. If they lose this amount they may then buy back in for a minimum of $50,000, although many of the pro’s have sat down with far more.

The chance to see into the world of high stakes cash poker played by the biggest stars and highest rollers in the world of poker has been something to relish. High Stakes Poker is the reality of poker outside of the televised WPT and WSOP tournaments – with or without cameras such high stakes cash games go on in Vegas every day, with hundreds of thousands of dollars changing hands in a single pot.

Season One of High Stakes Poker featured, among others, such household poker names as Daniel Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth, neither of whom had a season to remember. Hellmuth is famous for supposedly being a hopeless cash game player when up against the top high rollers, and this series seemed to prove the reputation may be justified. Traditional Hellmuth rants and strops have become a familiar sight as money has flown from his pockets.

Negreanu has also struggled, and was down $750,000 at one point, before he managed to grind back $550,000, leaving him (just) $200,000 to the bad. Sam Farha on the other hand has made full use of his bizarre style, and has enjoyed great success over this first season.

Along with Negreanu and Farha, Doyle Brunson has now pencilled himself in for Season Two of High Stakes Poker; expect many more big name players to join them before long.

In this last episode of the current season Jennifer Harman, Todd Brunson, Antonio Esfandiari, Johnny Chan, Barry Greenstein and Los Angeles Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss will join Phil Hellmuth at the table as he attempts to resurrect his high stakes reputation. There will be a minimum of $700,000 at the table, but the real amount is likely to be well over $1 million.
