Ex-WSOP Champ Robert Varkonyi wins Extreme Poker Championship
The 2002 WSOP Champion Robert Varkonyi has added another title to his mantelpiece with the capture of the Extreme Poker Championship from defending champion Juha Hellpi.

The brainchild of InterPoker, the inaugural Extreme Poker Championships was won by the Fin Juha Hellpi in the gentle waters of the Caribbean last year. At a depth of 30 feet and with a depleted oxygen tank, Hellpi won the championship and earned the right to decide on this year’s venue.

He decided to take the championship into the rather less accommodating climate that he is used to, and the latest instalment of the extreme poker championship took place on an ice shelf in Finland.

Helppi, Varkonyi and four internet qualifiers battled it out in temperatures that sometimes reached as low as -15°C. But as if that wasn’t cold enough, players were allowed to re-buy in the tournament by trading an item of clothing for chips. Varkonyi wasted no time stripping off, as an early bad beat left him minus his parker – and the same fate befell three other players.

As the tournament reached the latter stages Varkonyi took to running around the table to try and keep him warm, and eventually he outdrew the native Hellpi in the heads-up stage to win the championship, and the right to decide where the next round takes place. Something tells me it won’t be in Antarctica.
