Just 27 left in WPT World Poker Challenge
After a lightning quick day two in the 2006 WPT World Poker Challenge from the Reno Hilton just 27 players were left to battle it out for the $1 million plus first prize.
Lightning quick in poker terms is, of course, relative, and in this case equates to 11 hours; a lifetime in drag racing, but to trim a poker field of 181 down the requisite three tables for tomorrows play 11 hours is a flat out sprint.
A host of big name players dropped out on day two, including Allen Cunnigham, J.C. Tran, John Juanda, Freddy Deeb and Young Phan, but there are still a number who remain in the race, including the man who rates himself the third greatest poker player of all time, Mr Barry Greenstein.
Liz Lieu is also looking dangerous; the only remaining woman in the tournament, Lieu started day two with the chip lead and although she took some hits over the days play, a late rush saw end the day in fourth place with over $300,000 chips.
527 players started the event on Monday, which paid down to 36th place. Interestingly, there was some debate among players about the cut off point which ended in a suggestion that $50,000 be taken off first place to be split equally between the 36th - 41st placed finishers.
Ultimately this proposal was scrapped after opposition from Gavin Smith, himself a short stack at the time. He eventually managed to finish 30th, but he wont have endeared himself to, among others, Richard Brodie, who ended up being the unfortunate bubble boy, finishing in 37th place and earning not one cent.
He pushed with K-5 from the small blind only to find Burt Boutin in the big blind with 9-9. Brodie did hit his king on the turn, but Boutin made a straight on the river. There was no consolation prize for the bubble boy this time round.
Leading the field on day three will be Tom Schneider with $507,000 chips, followed by Tony Martin with $422,500 and James Davis with $348,000. Watch this space to see how the event unfolds.
